CAR ART
Motorcycles, classic, and vintage automobiles are a recurring subject in my work. Light falling on reflective objects, defining them, creating pattern, distortion, and rhythm intrigues me. My work begins with multiple reference photographs to which are freehand to paint in a fluid and open-ended process. I am not simply recreating exact copies of photographs, but manipulating and altering them, heightening the impressions of color and light, to create an image. Some are cropped close-up images that on first view, are very abstract. The emotional impact that the automobile and motorcycle has on the American culture draws viewers to the work. We are creatures of feeling as well as thought and I strive in my work, to have the viewer stop and take the time to see what they think they know, and be surprised by what they see.

Long road trip with endless miles of highway gives one plenty of time to think, especially as a passenger. Looking out the front, side windows, and side mirror all at once, I saw myself in the present. The future was in the road ahead and the past was in the rear view. An image that most of us can relate to. The composition was so fun to work on as I love emphasizing and manipulating the diagonals to create a dynamic image.

A local car show was the inspiration for this piece. This orange drew my attention and I don't believe that I've ever worked with such an intense color before and certainly not orange. The reflections of the people walking by added to the attraction and I put myself in the painting. This piece was included in an exhibition of women artists at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY.

This was inspired by the Concoure d'Elegance in Pebble Beach, CA. The cars had been judged and they were lined up for the awards, each owner/driver waiting for their turn. This painting shows an amazing ‘30’S Mercedes waiting in line. All eyes in the crowd are focused away from this car, even the people reflected in the chrome and paint aren't paying any attention to this beauty. I hadn’t done oil painting in a while and thought I’d give it a try. Since I like to change things quickly the oil was frustrating!
